Focus peaking is inconsistent
Mar 14, 2019
For enabling FP, I set D10 option to Medium and set the color to RED. But the menu value still shows "--" as if the D10(Focus peaking) is not enabled. In spite of showing "--", some time FP works but never in AF mode. I would like to use FP for fine tuning AF without changing the mode to MF. Basically I can not make FP work in AF mode.
One more forum member reported similar issue, and suggests two solutions and none of them worked for me. The solutions are a) de-focus by large amount then FP starts working b) Press the focus preset on lens(user was using 500mm PF lens).
I tried both and none worked. I think FP is buggy. Hope it gets fixed in next firmware update.

It's user error. You have to either hold a half press of the shutter release or hold down the AF-ON button while turning the focus ring in order to see peaking.

I use 'focus peaking' all the time with my manual focus lenses and it works great! It's the only way I can focus accurately with these old eyes when I use my Nikkor 500mm f/8 Reflex Ai-S lens. Focus peaking does not work in AF mode.

That is not correct. See my post above. You have to either hold a half press of the shutter release or hold down the AF-ON button while turning the focus ring in order to see peaking.

With AF-ON button pressed PF works. These are the combos i tried (500mm PF).
Lens Body
A/M AF-C & AF-S No-FP
M/A AF-C & AF-S Yes-FP
M M Yes-FP
Best subject testing FP is alphabets. Next I will have try 200mm macro.
Thanks every one

In case you have FP enabled in general, it works as follows:
If you use a manual lens, there is no autofocussing, naturally. Hence, FP is active all the time for these lenses.
If you use an autofocus lens and are in manual focus mode, FP is also active.
If you use an autofocus lens and are in autofocus mode, FP is only active if you half-press the AF ON or shutterrelease button and use the focus ring of the lens at the same time.

I often have to MF on a bird or animal in clutter. The combination of FP with focus-point turning Green in the Z7 are a superb combination. It helps turning setting the lens to M/A (not A/M).
If only Nikon can fold this into the FW in the D850 and other DSLRs.The focus assist aids in DSLRS are inadequate.
Poor ground screen and it's yet more expense to try and buy 3rd party K type focusing screens with the split-screen like my FM2 and F3.This is the achilles heel using older glass on the great little DSLR that's the Df. A Z type focus-peaking in the FW is hopefully achievable (?)

I think you misread the original issue. This is about peaking while using the auto-focus mode. Manual focus always has peaking, as long as you have it enabled.

Which is actually using manual override of the AF system. Using focus peaking with AF doesn't seem like the best approach.
If you release the manual focus ring in AF-C or AF-A mode I believe the camera will return to AF immediately.

Is that in the Nikon manual or something you discovered yourself? If not an authorized Nikon feature, I prefer not to use it. I find no use for it in AF anyway.
