How prestigious is Alpha Omega Alpha? ›

Alpha Omega Alpha, founded in 1902, is the national medical honor society. Election to Alpha Omega Alpha is an honor signifying a lasting commitment to professionalism, leadership, scholarship, research, and community service.

A lifelong honor, membership in the society confers recognition for a physician's dedication to the profession and art of healing. More than 4,000 students, residents/fellows, faculty, and alumni are elected each year.

In general, being inducted into AOA means you're at the top of your class - or you were at some point. That is, at some schools, you get into AOA because you did well in your preclinical years and crushed Step 1. But you might be terrible on your SubI's and, if so, you'd have trouble getting into residency.

Nominees must be in good academic standing and must not have any professionalism concerns. Each school/Chapter may determine the best timing for their elections. Chapters may choose to nominate all or a portion of their quota of student members at any time during the final year prior to graduation.

Eligibility. The top 25 percent of a medical school class is eligible for nomination into the society, and up to 16 percent of the class may be selected based on the academic record as well as leadership, character, service to the School and the community, and demonstrated professionalism.

Multiple institutions have disaffiliated from the AOA, including the UCSF School of Medicine, the Yale School of Medicine, and the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest and most prestigious honor society.

AOA medical schools confer an advantage on students who receive AOA membership when it comes to matching. This advantage is most pronounced in the most competitive specialties – and likely in the most competitive residency programs.

Alpha Omega Alpha's national offices are located in Aurora, Colorado. The Board of Directors includes Chapter Councilors, student and resident members, a medical association member, and members at-large. The Board, in cooperation with AΩA's Executive Director, is responsible for all activities of the organization.

Eligibility requirements include scholastic excellence, capacity for leadership, integrity, service to school and the community. Nationally, this eligibility is established as being inclusive of those in the upper quartile of the class expected to graduate.

To be able to be evaluated for membership in AOA, a student must be in the top 25% of the class.

A pack of wolves usually comprises a dominant (alpha) pair; an individual or a couple following in importance, and most likely to replace the current alphas (referred to as the beta pair); next in line, are individuals in the middle ranks, these are followed by one or more wolves of the lowest (omega) rank.

AOA membership provided a moderate advantage to matching into dermatology residency. A number of schools do not have AOA chapters. Even in those schools, many of them rank students against each other. Regardless of AOA status, we can see that class rank is an important factor in successfully matching into dermatology.
