Honor Society Movie Review (2024)

A Lot or a Little?

What you will—and won't—find in this movie.

  • Positive Messages

    a little

Be authentic, and work on those relationships that allow you to be yourself. Lying and scheming to get what you want usually backfires. Respect others' life choices, even if they're different from ones you might make. Instagram is often used to create an image and provoke envy or desire. Don't judge a book by its cover.

  • Positive Role Models

    very little

Honor is a good student and cares about her future, but she treats others poorly, disrespects the adults around her, and thinks she's better than her classmates. She says she feels trapped in the town where she lives, and she manipulates others for her own goal of getting out of there. Other classmates feel and do the same, but some are living more authentic lives.

  • Diverse Representations

    some

Characters represent multiple races. One character is gay but hiding his sexuality. Other gay characters are "out."

  • Violence & Scariness

    a little

A teen talks about his dead parents and foster family. Two women engage in a fistfight; one is knocked down by the other's karate moves. A female teen avoids being "roofied" at a bar and instead uses the drug on a man she worries will make a pass at her.

  • Sex, Romance & Nudity

    some

No sexual activity beyond kissing, but a lot of sex talk and innuendo, including discussion of people "screwing," sending provocative pictures, lingerie, body parts, colloquialisms for oral sex and masturbation, and p*rn. A teacher comes on to a female student, hinting that he would trade an academic favor for a sexual one. She lets him believe she's willing, and she also tries to seduce a fellow student.

  • Parents Need to Know

Parents need to know that Honor Society is a teen film about high school students willing to do just about anything to get into the best college. This includes leading people on sexually and emotionally, scheming to change their lives, and slipping drugs ("roofies") to others. The main character has a very cynical view of her school and town, considering herself better than those around her, including her parents, classmates, and teachers. She's forced to learn the value of talent, effort, humility, and genuine friendship. There's no sexual activity in the film beyond kissing, but there's a lot of sex talk and innuendo, including discussion of people "screwing," sending provocative pictures, lingerie, body parts, colloquialisms for oral sex and masturbation, and p*rn. A teacher comes on to a female student, hinting that he would trade an academic favor for a sexual one. She lets him believe she's willing, and she also tries to seduce a fellow student. Language includes "f--k," "s--t," "bulls--t," variations on "ass" and "hell," "bitch," "bastards," "c--k," "penis," "balls," "boobs," "loser," and "stupid." What's the Story?

Honor Rose (Angourie Rice), the title character of HONOR SOCIETY, is a top student at her high school and wants nothing more than to say goodbye to her mediocre small town forever. Her plan is to go to Harvard, and for that she'll need the recommendation of smarmy guidance counselor Mr. Calvin (Christopher Mintz-Plasse). He surprises her by informing her that she is just one of his top four candidates. Scheming and posing, as she's done since she started high school, Honor figures out ways to occupy the other three candidates in passion projects that will derail them from academics. The holdout is Michael Dipnicky (Gaten Matarazzo), a nerd with an apparent crush on Honor. Seducing him will lead her down unexpected paths.
