Lafayette was once inhabited by the indigenous Atakapa-Ishak, Choctaw, Chitimacha, and Opelousa tribes. However, by the mid-18th century, the French, Spanish and Acadian colonists had established themselves along the Vermilion River, giving the city its name, Vermilionville. In 1184, the town was renamed Lafayette after an American and French Revolutions hero.

Downtown Square is a remarkable place to visit. It features historic buildings, with the courthouse being the centerpiece of the city.
