In the United States, academic grading commonly takes on the form of five, six or seven letter grades. Traditionally, the grades are A+, A, A−, B+, B, B−, C+, C, C−, D+, D, D− and F, with A+ being the highest and F being lowest. In some cases, grades can also be numerical.

The 4.0 scale is the most commonly used GPA scale. A 4.0 represents an A or A+, with each full grade being a full point lower: 3.0=B, 2.0=C, and 1.0=D. Pluses are an additional one-third of a point, while minuses are the subtraction of one-third of a point. For example, an A- is a 3.7, and a B+ is a 3.3.

Common examples of grade conversion are: A+ (97–100), A (93–96), A- (90–92), B+ (87–89), B (83–86), B- (80–82), C+ (77–79), C (73–76), C- (70–72), D+ (67–69), D (65–66), D- (below 65).

Types of Grading Systems

They are classified into seven types: Grading Percentage– from 0 to 100 percent. Letter Grading and Variations – from A grade to F grade. Standard-referenced Grading– typically comparing students to each other with letter grades.

When starting a new target, many students have no prior knowledge, and begin at 1. As students learn, they can demonstrate partial mastery, and score 2. Once they meet a target, they score 3. Typically 4's are used for students who exceed targets.

According to this illustration, grade 4 requires 56 - 66 per cent, grade 5 requires 67 - 77 per cent and grade 6 requires 78 - 88 per cent.

A - is the highest grade you can receive on an assignment, and it's between 90% and 100% B - is still a pretty good grade! This is an above-average score, between 80% and 89% C - this is a grade that rests right in the middle.

The threshold for a good mark depends on the school and the study grade, but on most occasions, 75 or higher is considered a good one.

Is 3.0 GPA good? ›

Is a 3.0 GPA Good? A 3.0 GPA is the national average for all graduating high school students. Because of this, a 3.0 GPA means that you are eligible to apply at most (if not all) colleges and your application will be competitive for admission at many institutions.

B GPA. A B letter grade is equivalent to a 3.0 GPA, or Grade Point Average, on a 4.0 GPA scale, and a percentage grade of 83–86.

Is a 2.7 GPA good? This GPA means that you've earned an average grade of a B- across all of your classes. Since a 2.7 GPA is lower than the national average of 3.0 for high school students, it will limit your options for college. 3.95% of schools have an average GPA below a 2.7.

Grades of "D+," "D" or "D-," while considered passing for undergraduate students, indicate weak performance.

1930: The letter E disappears from the grading scale

That said, most colleges had stopped using this letter to grade students by the year 1930. According to numerous sources, colleges stopped using E as part of the grading scale because of concern over students thinking that the letter grade stood for excellent.

Student GPAs and transcripts will also be based on the four-point scale (e.g. a “4” is equivalent to an A or 4.0 points in the GPA scale, a “3” is equivalent to an B or 3.0 points in the GPA scale, etc.).

Bottom of a grade 4 is comparable to the bottom of the old grade C. Bottom of a grade 1 is comparable to the bottom of the old grade G.

GPA Stands for Grade Point Average and is the number that represents your academic achievement in high school. GPAs that don't account for how hard your classes were are called unweighted and are reported on a 4.0 scale. GPAs that monitor how difficult coursework is are called weighted and are reported on a 5.0 scale.
